MEST1 Mock exam: learner reponse

1) Type up any feedback or comments from your paper in full (you do not need to write mark/grade if you do not wish to).

Question 2 lacks relevance at times and there is repetition that takes place which isn't needed.
Question 4 there is a lot of repetition also.
Section A written English / question focus / repetition keeps you from top levels.
Section B: Question 6 give the studio if possible, needs more question focus, does it link to enjoyment? more specific.
Overall section b loses question focus near the end, spelling and you missed important narrative theory.

2) Did you succeed in meeting or exceeding your target grade in AS Media? If not, how many additional marks do you need across Section A and Section B to achieve your target grade?
I met my media target grade.

3) Read through the mark scheme. Pay particular attention to pages 5-8 that has anticipated content for each of the questions in Section A. How many of these potential points did you make? Did you successfully answer the questions?
question 1: i mentioned 2/6 of the points in the mark scheme. I do feel i successfully answered the question because in these points i used various types within that section.
question 2: i mentioned 2/9 points. I don't feel that i answered the question properly because of the depth my answers lacked and not enough reference to the different brands referred to in the clip.
question 3: i mentioned 2/9 points. i do feel i answered the question successfully because of the alternative yet valid points i made as well as going into depth.
question 4: i mentioned 2/6 points. i do feel i answered the question well because of the alternative in depth points i made however i could have made further points to get higher marks in the question.

4) Which was your strongest question in Section A? Why did you do better in that particular question?
my strongest question in section a was question 3. This is because not only did i agree with the statement on a personal level but also because it was the question i was able to go into more depth with.

5) Which was your weakest question in Section A? Again, try and identify why this happened. Did you misinterpret the question? Did you run out of time?
my weakest question was question 2. This is because i struggled to realise many references to other brands and despite identifying a few i did lose confidence in the question preventing me from allocating efficient time to the question due to thinking about it too much and not being able to elaborate on the few points i was making.

6) Rewrite your answer for your weakest question in Section A. This should now be a detailed, three-paragraph 12-mark response.

Question 2 Media Institutions (12 marks)

How are links with other brands and media products used in the trailer to promote ‘Call of Duty: Ghosts’?

In terms of institution many links are made to various other brands and media products helping to promote 'Call Of Duty' through appealing to various similar target audiences and helping to create positive associations with the brand. To start with, the brand uses a lot of star power to promote the brand. Using starts such as the cameo appearance of Megan Fox, in the building sequence of the clip, helps to create connotations which are preferably positive with the brand. Megan Fox is presented in the context of the trailer, e.g the way she shoots down the drone behind one of the protagonists, which allows synergy to be created with the Megan Fox 'institution' and the Call of duty brand. This would not only encourage the male audience to prefer the brand through the appeal of women (Mulvey: male gaze) but also would encourage pre-existing Megan Fox fans who have already developed a personal relationship(uses and gratifications theory: Blumler and Katz) with Megan Fox through being loyal fans and following her to play call of duty due to the associations being made. This is therefore a way that Megan Fox as a 'brand' helps to promote call of duty:ghosts through her cameo appearance in the trailer.

Another brand that the trailer links to is the space genre in general helping to promote call of duty ghosts. This is mainly done though the potential reference to 'Gravity' the movie. This is done through the astronaut scene which is almost identical to the scenes in the Gravity trailers. This not only provides the audience with the pleasure of noticing the movie reference but also helps to indirectly promote gravity or use gravity to promote the game. Moreover the connotations of Gravity as a brand is that of being unique, powerful, world changing and is also known for its amazing graphics and real life experience, these are all qualities the Call of Duty aims to convey through the connection of both the brands being associated together in the trailer. This would therefore be done through a preferred reading (Levi Strauss: representations theory) creating the connotations with the positive stereotypes of the movie (Perkins) rather than the negative. This is therefore a way that the link to the brand of space genre movies that are popular among males (their primary target audience) especially Gravity helps to promote the Call of duty brand through the trailer.

Another brand link made within the call of duty trailer is that to Buddy Movies especially The Hangover. This is done through the representation of the male protagonists. In various scenes we see them messing around like typical male friends eg. teasing about Megan Fox, nudging each other and laughing at the things they all do. This would therefore broaden the identification appeal (uses and gratifications theory: Blumblr and Katz) as a wide male audience would see themselves being presented in a rather accurate way due to the stereotypical behavior (Perkins). This therefore helps to link the male friendship brand connotation of 'buddy movies' and helps it appeal to the call of duty primary male audience and further the appeal of the game. Another 'buddy movie' reference especially to The hangover is the LA setting which is typically connotated with drug, sex, and having a good time in casinos etc. which are values the call of duty brand would like to associate itself due to the overlapping primary target audiences. This therefore is a way buddy movies such as the hang over are referenced in the call of duty trailer to help establish a positive and effective link between the two brands helping to promote the game.

7) Now look at the mark scheme for Section B. Did you cover all three media platforms? Did you write about three different films in your essay?
Yes

8) Question focus is the most important factor for a top-level response. Did you use the key words in the question in every paragraph?
Yes i did however despite this i started to drift of topic as i progressed through the essay.

9) Read the Examiner's Report in full. For each question in Section A, look at whether you included the things the Chief Examiner refers to in the stronger responses. Did any of the problems identified with some answers apply to you? Be specific. Now look at the Examiner's Report for your chosen question in Section B. Did your response fit the stronger or weaker examples highlighted by the Chief Examiner?

Section A

  • Q1- focus on the specific aspect
  • how excitement was replicated through the various camera shots
  • spectator feeling presented due to the P.O.V shots
  • On reflection of this section i feel that i did make reference to things such as sound and editing which the report suggests to show a lack of confidence in the camera work element of the media forms.
  • Q2- brands identified but unable to link them to the positive associations created caused this question to be deemed as fairly hard for students
  • genre conventions could have been referenced
  • could link Megan Fox to the transformers brand and then back to the game
  • reference to the singer and their loyal fan base didn't seem fit
  • In reflection i feel that i was unable to link the listed brands to the positive associations that would have appealed to the target audience which meant i hadn't correctly identified and answered the question which is why it was my weakest answer.
  • Q3- referencing to the construction of masculinity and stereotypes of this
  • direct address, identification and camerawork were the stronger aspects to mention
  • phallic symbols
  • i feel that i had a fairly good response to this question in regards to the report.
  • Q4- debates around the representation of gun violence
  • gap between reality of gun violence and its representation
  • comic and fantastic imagery audience was aware of the fantasy
  • stray bullet hitting jackpot in the casino
  • evidence from the trailer was important
  • In reflection i feel that the weaker aspect of my answer was that i failed to respond enough in the potential debates around gun violence and didn't identify the potential idea of it being understood as fantasy.
Section B

  • contemporary media debates
  • focus on case studies
  • need to have enough case study depth to provide balanced answers
  • range is extremely important
  • important to remain on the question set!
  • prevent repetition from taking place
  • (focus on Q6)
  • narrative enigmas in posters
  • trailers lead to fulfillment i narrative pleasures
  • important to link to audience enjoyment too
  • Overall i feel that my response fit, just about, the stronger answers due to the range of ideas i offered and made sure i was answering the question rather than just inputting the range of platforms and films. However i did need further question focus and more confidence in writing in quality rather than quantity as i did repeat myself a lot and also feel that the range wasn't as vast as the examiner would have liked.

10) Finally, identify three things you will do differently in the real exam in two weeks. These can refer to preparation, notetaking, Section A or Section B - it is up to you.
Firstly, i will make sure to do more practice papers in preparation.
I will also learn to not repeat myself when making points by making better plans.
Moreover i will make sure i learn my movie case studies in much more depth.

Broadcast

1) Write a close-textual analysis of the trailer using the MIGRAIN key concepts of Media Studies.

Media language -
The character in the trailer are wearing traditional clothes and also have a old fashioned way of talking. Straight away with the man walking through the fog and the dialogue the women speaks highlights this traditional concept. This in turn highlights the history genre of the movie as it is set in the past. The lighting is also used to create this sort of authentic perspective of the movie, through high key lighting with lots of filler lights as they make the characters seem glamorous but give them a realistic and rounded feel which prevents any overly dark shadows and strong contrasts being created.
The actors also play a huge part in the mise-en-scene as the various cameara angles such as the close ups and medium shots help to refelct the variety of emotion which range from anxiosness, pride and concern. These facial expression of the characters help to create a personal relationship with the audience, as they understadnt the emtions each character is going through which may also lead to identification. The movie is based on an historic event which the british viewer will defininatel be aware of but because of its importance it will be regonnised international too, therefore the international audience could identify with the individuals as well as the british audience, as the audience is likely to have some sort of memory of the event and the actors potentially represent the variety of emotions they themselves also felt during the occurance. The protagonist is shown to be closer to the camera in most the shot which helps to convey to the audience that he is in fact the main focus of the narrative but also helps to create 'more' of an identification and personal relationship with the character as he is physically closer to the camera than the rest of the actors.
The overall setting shows various climps of famous monuments, such as london bridge, where the text on screen is placed, this almost acts as an appeal for a more international audience as it is showing them glimses as what they deem as 'british' and the main aspects of their cultrue. Moreover it helps to create the overall feel of the heritage genre as the royal family is based in central london where all these momeuments do stand, they are things that cause pride for the nation due to the fact that they are regonised by such a wide audience. The old building also helps to create the more 'old' and traditional feel as the film is set in the past.

The mise-en-scene has been payed carefull attention to and is what drives the movie, this is instantly shown in the trailler as we can see just how much money and effort is put into inncorperating the tourist belifs of traditinal britian as well as the custume, makeup and setting that is relevent to the time period. This helps to place the film in the hertiage cinmea genre instantly as it causes pride for the country, attracts the 'american tourist audience' and puts vasts amount of money into the aestetics of the movie.

cinematography -
Cinematogrpahy is also another very important aspect that especially plays a vast role in the sucess of heritige cinmea movies. In the trailler we see that medium shots and long shots are used much more frequently than medium close ups and close ups which are used sparcily only to convey important expressions of the actors that add to the narrative of the movie and create identification and a personal relationship with the 'king' and the helper who is the therapist. This helps to not only capture the expessive set of the movie but also helps to add to the aestertics of the movie which help to create a more time period feel, as the audience is constantly motivated to take in the setting of the movie which is more 'historic' and set in the time period.

sound-
The trailler used snip-its of dialouge to convey an overall narrative of the movie as the king expresses constantly his difficulty of 'stuttering' as well as helping to convey the attention of each the characters, eg. the queen says she wants to help her husband, the king expresses he wants to be able to improve his speech and the therapist expresses how much he wants to help the characters in this process. This isntantly creates identification with characters similar to you, helps to aid what role each character plays and gives the reasoning for the disqualibrium as well as serving as engima codes as the audience become curious about the outcome of the jorney of helping him improve his speech.
The non-diegetic music is very 'grand' and almost 'traditional' 'classic' and 'motivational' 'powerful' which are all the conotations the story is trying to portray and typical conventional music to this sort of royal hetitage gerne.

institution/representation-
The main obvious institution that i feel is being portrayed is 'Britian' and the 'royal family'. All the monuments and 'american tourist viewpoint' features help to create this concept of britishness thus reinforcing a sterotypical view of what other counteries deem as 'britishness' . The motivational,  strrenght, power that the royal family endures to over come the kings problem in order to serve and communiate to the people of the country is a very postive image that is trying to be produced to the audeince. These representations thus use steortyping in order to create the dominant represenation which is postive and in favour of the movie.
The actual producation, distrubution etc. institions hardly feature in this trailler and just appear at the end of the trailler with the main producers at the top of the list. This conveys the idea that the producers of the film arent acutally the main selling point its much rather the concent of the movie itself, the 'birishness' 'grand' 'traditional' 'royal family centred' movie.
The TWC instition is introduced breifly in the start of the movie, faded and light so it doesnt disrupt the overall aestetics of the trailer. The time warners cable is easily to most popular out of the production companies and is a american comapny which provided most the funding thus the most important as they are what drives the publicity and accound for the sterotypical view of the british culture.

genre-
as expressed above, the cinematogrpahy, title, narrative and represenation accounts for the movie being a british heritage movie. The further genres expressed in the trailer is the fact of it being a biogtrpahty. The central focus of the king helps to convey this message, which is done though the cinematogpahy and narrative foucus on this life. This focus on his life is due to the stuttering problem he endures and works hard to over come which helps to add to the drama genre of the movie. The whole hetiage feel of the movie obviously points out the histroy element of gnere.

audience-
From the older characters and focus on an historic event the primary target audience is much older individuals, the strugglers and reformors. Looking at around the age of 30 + adueince. However history students and fans of the heritage cincmea will also be attracted to the movie due to the informational spect of the movie and the astetically spleasing cinmeatahpty. This is also reflected through the lack of social media links in the trailer which is very conventional now in movies targeted at a younger adueice.
The american tourist portrayal of the sterotypes of britihsness and theroyal family help to attract a american, or any international audience, who like history and are attracted to british culture.

ideology& values-
The idea of the royal family looking out for the good of the country and the cpuntry being foucsed on the royal family is portrared.A message suggesting that the royal family supports the people and vice-vura.
It is also expressing how any diffiulties, eg. speech diffiulties, can be overcomed and all you need to do is reach out for help.
There is also the portryal that all wives(fmailies) care and support their husbands(and family members) and therphists take their job very seriously and thus always bringing out results.

narrative -
Ive mentioned narrative throughout the top sections so i shall summeri it here. The narative prortryaled is one of equlaibrim at the start, as speech being given, then a disequlaibium, of the stuttering during the speech. A hint of the new equalirbirum is stated at the sound brindge near the end as he adresses the country again which appeals to the pride of the movie and nation audience pleaure. The narrative is refvealed thrugh the dialougue and text ion screen as the enigma code is created of how the ing over comes his stuttering and how the people of the nation respond to this outcome.

2) Find examples of television promotion on YouTube (adverts, chat shows, ‘red carpet’ interviews etc.) and post them to your blog along with an explanation of how these promote the film.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_cIDSw8HVc

This helps in many ways from the point of developing a understanding for the movie and thus creating a sort of personal relationship with one of the characters which would motivate an individual to watch the movie but also create personal identification if the individual agrees with any of the points/views the movie expresses or has.

This helps to reach a wider audience and add to the support and realism of the film. If the movie deals with everyday problems etc. that many individuals have many people are motivated to watch the movie in order to understand the feelings these individuals go through. The BBC channel also has a wide audience due to it having (supposedly) unbiased opinions therefore reaching a wide audience regarding class, age etc.

3) Does the broadcast promotion use stars to create interest in the film?

The interview with the star does, relying on the concept of star power to guide the campaign whereas the bbc interview tries to use well known platform and presenters to promote the movie in a much more everyday lifestyle where viewers can benefit from watching it.

Print

1) Read at least THREE reviews of the film and provide a quote from each one.
http://www.theguardian.com/film/2011/jan/06/the-kings-speech-review
"The movie cleverly casts a new light on the dysfunctional tremor at the heart of Britain's royal family, and cheekily suggests there was a time  when a British monarch experimented with psychoanalysis, disguised as   speech therapy."

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/film/filmreviews/8244121/The-Kings-Speech-review.html
" it’s a thoroughly modern tale, the true-life story of a king’s efforts to overcome his stammer in order to face his public, constructed like a contemporary makeover narrative."

http://www.empireonline.com/movies/king-speech/review/
"A sense of terrible urgency engulfs the therapy, but what an ending it offers. George VI must use his faltering voice to soothe a frightened nation in a radio broadcast, all but conducted by Logue, transformed into match-winning glory. You’ll be lost for words."

2) Find examples of print promotion (e.g. film poster, billboard adverts etc.) on Google images and post them to your blog along with an explanation of how these promote the film.

The main image of focus is the 2 main leading characters thus helping to use star power to promote the movie which is in synergy with using star power as "Helena" is mentioned right underneath the title. By using a review quote it helps to not only summarise the narrative to cause interest but "performance of his life" is appealing to his pre-existing fan base and individuals interested in the actors acting in general thus helping to make it almost 'reliable'.

This is also similar to the billboard avert however the ratings also have stars. This instantly tells the audience that the movie is a good one due to such high reviews before even having to read the motivational reviews encouraging the audience to watch the movie. The use of the famous land mark also has a promotional value as it adds to the pride aspect of our lines of appeal, of our heritage and national pride but also encourages a much wider audience too due to it expressing the 'Britishness' many 'tourist' individuals like to see eg. attracting an american audience also.

The pose of the protagonist is the same in all of the prints creating synergy with the rest of the promotional print methods thus reflecting a proud character who many people admire potentially, using again pride to attract an audience.

3) Choose ONE print advert and write a textual analysis of what it communicates to the audience.

The 'Victoria Memorial' is in view in the center of the image. The use of this famous landmark, that represents the empire, reflects one of the major things 'Britain' generally feels the most pride for. The statue shows Victoria, motherhood, justice and truth, virtues Britian wants to be known for and the royal family holds close to heart. This monument in the background communicates the things 'Britian' holds the most pride for thus attracting an audience that values and adores the country and appeals to the audience pleasure of pride regarding ones nation. Moreover the use of a famous monument also attracts an international audience, because (applying medurts theory of shorthand) it holds a stereotypical view of what London looks like and holds to value, providing them with an overall image of the narrative and its focus.
The main protagonist, 'Colin Firth' is in key focus also, and faces the camera directly. This helps to use the star power appeal of a well known actor to attract an audience that is already a fan of Mr Firth. His facial expression seems focused and dutiful, this works in synergy with the royal uniform he wears, as it conveys to the audience the message that this character is one that is prideful, focused and one who knows his duty to his people. This therefore works to reinforce the stereotype, or tries to reinforce the message, that the royal family cares of the people and holds these characteristics. It also helps the audience identify with the protagonist as they may also hold these traits, or it may reflect traits that they see in the king and are proud of and appreciate. Mr Rush is also a well acclaimed actor who's side profile is in view, and he is on the poster in general, highlights that he is an important character, but isn't nearly as much importance as the protagonist. It also helps the audience understand that this man may be more common and someone who doesn't actually link to the overall royal and traditional theme of the poster - he is infact a much more common man. Star power is still present though because enough of his face is seen to identify him and appeal to his certain fan base. Other actors are also named in the central area of the poster which again works with the theme of star power.
The colour scheme is also very important when conveying the message of the heritage cinima and working in synergy with the narrative that works around the royal family. The navy, light blue and gold colour scheme connote the aspects of richness, royalty, and have a clean cut nature. Thus conveying to the audience the potential themes to of movie being historic and prideful and suggesting a grand and rich narrative.
Also present on this poster are reviews. One of the reviews are by the daily mail, which has an audeince thats already interested in the royal family and its affairs as well as being older readers. This helps certain audiences to regard the reiw more highlight than audiences the poster isnt necissarily targetting. Just above these reviews we have the slogan "the nation awaits" which adds to the overall royal familty orintated theme. The slogan is put so it looks like the british instittions they are quoting are the people of the country and we, out of the context of the film, are also waiting in anticipation. Thus trying to attract the overall british audience instead of just the older individuals.

4) How is the film’s brand constructed? What does the brand connote? Does it remind you of any other brands or similar films?

The brand therefore overall connotes national pride, heritage, history and a courageous power. Similar brands may be movies like 'the suffragettes' where a pride of past figures comes though, and 'Paddington' where london is seen, like many other movies, though the 'american tourist viewpoint' with various famous London monuments placed where they don't typically occur.

E-media

1) Research the film’s presence on social media: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram etc. How does the film’s social media presence help promote the film?

Facebook page.
This post helps to promote the movie by linking it directly with the current royal family, its helping DVD/Download etc. sales increase at the time of the royal wedding.

This helps to promote the movie by highlighting the awards the movie won, thus helping to add publicity that shows potential audiences that its a movie that you should watch in a more 'reliable' way.
This helps star power to drive the promotion.

As you can see, social media wasn't one of the major marketing areas.

2) Analyse the official website for the film. How does it use the film’s brand? What examples of synergy can you find with the other platforms?

The website

The first thing you see when you go on the website is the picture above. A paining of the actual royal family, this reference to the real royal family helps to create synergy with the various platforms as it highlights the actual history of the movie and helps to appeal to the audiences pride for the real royal family the movie tries to represent. There is also an 'about' tab and an 'index' tab which helps to address the historic nature of the movie. The fact that the image is a painting highlights the idea of historic importance in itself as that is how 'pictures' and 'famous people' were captured in the past, it highlights heritage and tradition.

In the press tab we see synergy with the promotions that use the oscars won to promote the movie

3) Did the film run any kind of e-media based campaign to generate interest in the film?

no

4) Can you find any examples of the two-step flow theory online – did celebrities or journalists tweet or post about the film in order to promote it to their followers?

not able to find any

Audience

1) Who is the target audience for this film? Demographics and psychographics.
a much older audience with average age of around 45-55. A target audience for many of these period-drama movies is usually 16-70 with a 60% female and 40% male audience due to many of the representations and subject areas covered. Historical dramas like this would be a fairly dominant (but not by too much) british audience who could understand the texual references to past events and particular characterisitcs of royal family members. Likly to be of a c1-a audiences, prodominanlty a middle class audience who are more prideful and feel more incline to look into the matters of the royal family. Likely to be in education or have studied at degree level to apriciate the hsitoric aspect.
This older audeince is therefor emore likely to be of the resigned psychogrpahics group who are orinated in the past and who could appriciate the familirarlity of the event that occured in the past.
A fair emount of stuggles may be targeted too as they would appriciate the imoact and and sensation of the movie. Aspirers and reformers would also like to watch the movie because of exploring the more rich, royal lifestlye which is away from everyday life (also explorers)

2) How does the cross-media promotional campaign target this audience?
more tv interviews and chat shows rather than social media based eg. ni instagram page, due to the appeal to an older target audience who arent so active on execssive social media unlike ill manors which was all over social media due to its appeal to a younger taget audience.

3) What audience pleasures does the film provide? Think about the BFI lecture on audience pleasures in British film.
National pride due to the heritage aspect

4) What similar films would the target audience enjoy? Justify your suggestions.
(mentioned above)

Institution

1) Which film studio produced the film? What other films have they produced? Do they have a track record with this kind of film and this target audience?

See-Saw Films (as See Saw Films) - main producer See-Saw is a British and Australian company specializing in international Film and Television.
They have also produced the movies;
Oranges and Sunshine (2010) - a movie based on a social worker working for the British govenemnt
Mr. Holmes (2015) - a movie based on a retired Sherlock Holmes
Macbeth- an adaptation of Shakespeare play
These movies all play into the more historic movies that reflect some sort of british culture be that in present time or the past. These genres are all drama consisting of history, war and mystery.
Thus a similar style and genre which would therefore also have a very similar target audience.

Weinstein Company, The (presents) - funding
Movies like 'war and peace' which also serve as a historical context

2) Which company distributed the film in the UK? What other films have they distributed?
Momentum Pictures
They've also distributed;
women in black one and two- which is very historic and has expenisive mise-en-scene
Frankenstein's Army (2013) - a horror movie based on world war two and Nazi Germany combined with aspects of Shelly's Frankenstein
Chalet Girl (2011) - a comedy romance

3) Do they have a track record with this kind of film and this target audience?
Fairly, 'Women in black' is a British movie that is based in a historic era which is like the one of kings speech, the mise-en-scene similarly has been payed close attention too. Heritage cinema usually is popular with romance and comedy movies which is what 'Chalet Girl' is like. Moreover 'Frankenstein's army' also contained historic references like the kings speech and would be popular with individuals who have a literary interest due to references to Mary Shelly's Frankenstein.

4) What was the budget for the film?
$15,000,000 (estimated) - £10,636,864.65

5) How successful was the film financially? Why do you think this was?
According to IMDb
the opening weekend gross was
$355,450 (USA) (28 November 2010) (4 Screens)
£3,523,102 (UK) (9 January 2011) (395 Screens)

which is around 5 million US$

$414,000,000 (Worldwide) (15 January 2014)

Therefore you can see the movie was hugely successful. This is probably due to the massive budget helping to aid the promotion of the movie but also use well known actors who have a pre-exisiting fan base that will serve as a target audience. Moreover the 'American tourist' viewpoint meant that the movie could become popular or a worldwide scale due to it reinforcing the stereotypical aspect that foreigners understand helping them to understand the narrative and characters much more easily. The appeal to a British audience was also high as many audiences are fond of the audience pleasure of national pride, the genre is also well established with the British audience which meant that the genre itself already had a pre-exisiting audience that is very likely to watch the movie despite what the narrative concept may be.

6) Was this film more successful in the UK or worldwide/USA? Why do you think this is?

Due to the vast amount of Oscars won by the kings speech i presume it was more popular in the US, i believe this is the case because the British audiences may have felt obliged to keep to the 'true' nature of events where in fact it is said that the movie manipulates these facts too much therefore it might have left the British audience less impressed. The Americans would be able to appreciate the stereotypical represenation of these birtish factors much more than a british audience who might have found they couldnt particularly relate to these apsects.

7) What certificate was the film given (12A, 18 etc.)? What was the reason for this certificate? Is the certification important for this film in terms of targeting its audience? Why?

According to IMDb

12A due to frightening and intense scenes- it is a light atmosphere mostly with a few difficult moments (reference to war/ historical smoking) for thematic perpouses
a few cases of curses used and casual drinking. A unpleasant incident when the king is  found dead in bed.

i dont beleive this was too much of an important element because most the audience watching the film were older indivudals who wouldnt be effect even if the movie was rated 18.
